‘ಥೇಮ್ಸ್ ತಟದ ತವಕ ತಲ್ಲಣ’ ಎಂಬುದು ಲೇಖಕ -ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತ ಸತೀಶ್ ಚಪ್ಪರಿಕೆ ಅವರ ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಕಥನ. ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಶಿವ್ನಿಂಗ್ ಸ್ಕಾಲರ್ ಷಿಪ್ ನೊಂದಿಗೆ, ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮದ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ತರಬೇತಿಗಾಗಿ ಮೂರು ತಿಂಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಬ್ರಿಟನ್ ಗೆ ತೆರಳಿದ್ದ ಅವರು, ವೃತ್ತಿ ಸಂಬಂಧಿ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಜೊತೆ ತಾವು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡು ಪಡೆದ ಅನುಭವಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಖಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಒಬ್ಬ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ವಿಮರ್ಶಾತ್ಮಕ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದು, ಕುತೂಹಲ ಮೂಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಜಾಗತಿಕ ನೆಲೆಯ ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮದ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸುತ್ತಲೇ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮವನ್ನು ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ, ಎರಡೂ ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮವನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸುವ ಶೈಲಿ ಆಪ್ತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಕೃತಿಯು, ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಯ ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ವಿಭಾಗದಡಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬಹುಮಾನ ಪಡೆದಿದೆ.
ಕೃತಿ ಬೆನ್ನುಡಿಯ ಕಾಣ್ಕೆ ಇದು; ‘ಮೇಲ್ನೋಟಕ್ಕೆ ಇದೊಂದು ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಕಥನ. ಆದರೆ, ದೂರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡದ್ದು- ಕೇಳಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಕೇವಲ ಅಕ್ಷರ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಟ್ಟಿ ಇಳಿಸಲು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ನಡೆಸಿದ ಒಣ ಯತ್ನವಲ್ಲ. ಒಬ್ಬ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತ, ಗ್ರೇಟ್ ಬ್ರಿಟನ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ವೃತ್ತಿಪರ ನೆಲೆಯೊಳಗೆ ನಡೆಸಿದ ಸುತ್ತಾಟ ಮತ್ತು ಆ ವೇಳೆ ಆತ ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಸಿದ ಪ್ರವಾಸದ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಿದು. ಆಗ ಅನುಭವಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದದ್ದನ್ನು ಮುಷ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಡಿದು, ಇದನ್ನು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದಷ್ಟು ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಅಕ್ಷರ ರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ಇಳಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ. ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ, ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿಯ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದು ಬದ್ದತೆ, ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕತೆ ಎಂಬ ಪದಗಳು ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನೇ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡಿವೆ ಎಂಬ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ಜಿಜ್ಞಾಸೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂಚೂರು ಆತ್ಮಾವಲೋಕನದ ಸ್ವರೂಪ, ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ, ಈ ಕೃತಿ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಪ್ರಯೋಗಶೀಲ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತನೊಬ್ಬ ಕೆಲಕಾಲ ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತು, ಮೂಲಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯ ಒತ್ತಡಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿ ನಲುಗಿ, ಪ್ರವಾಹಕ್ಕೆ ಎದುರಾಗಿ ಈಜಿ ತಳವೂರಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ವಾಸ್ತವ- ಅವಾಸ್ತವಕ್ಕೆ ಹಿಡಿದಿರುವ ಕೈಗನ್ನಡಿ, ಇದೊಂದು ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ಲೋಕದೊಳಗಿನ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಕಥನವಾಗಿದೆ’
ಈ ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಕಥನವು 2009 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂಕಿತ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನವು ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿ (ಪುಟ: 162, ಬೆಲೆ: 130 ರೂ) ಪ್ರಕಾಶಿಸಿತ್ತು.
ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತ, ಲೇಖಕ, ಕಾದಂಬರಿಕಾರ ಸತೀಶ್ ಚಪ್ಪರಿಕೆ ಅವರು ಮೂಲತಃ ಉಡುಪಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಕುಂದಾಪುರ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನ ಚಪ್ಪರಿಕೆಯವರು. ಕೃಷಿ ಕುಟುಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಅವರು, ತಂದೆಯ ಹೋಟೆಲ್ ಉದ್ಯಮದಿಂದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ನೆಲಸಿದರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮದ ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ‘ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಶಿವ್ನಿಂಗ್ ಸ್ಕಾಲರ್‌ಷಿಪ್’ ಪಡೆದ ಏಕೈಕ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಗ್ಗಳಿಕೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಿರುವ ಸತೀಶ್ ಲಂಡನ್‌ನ ವೆಸ್ಟ್ ಮಿನಿಸ್ಟರ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮದ ಉನ್ನತ ವ್ಯಾಸಂಗ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಸಸ್ಯ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾತಕೋತ್ತರ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದ ನಂತರ ಕೇವಲ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದಲೇ ‘ಪ್ರಜಾವಾಣಿ’ ದಿನಪತ್ರಿಕೆ ಸೇರಿ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತ ಜೀವನ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದ ಅವರು ಸುಮಾರು ಹತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇವೆ ...

A travelogue with a difference

SATISH Chapparike is a man of multiple talents. He is a good feature and news photographer, environmentalist, botanist, short story writer, critic and journalist well-versed in reporting any field including general, sports, arts, industry and commerce, finance. He is good in electronic media also.
It is expected that if he writes anything it should be gripping. So is his book ‘Thames Thatada Tavaka Tallana’ (published in 2009), a travelogue in the world media.
While he was working in a Kannada daily Chapparike had gone to London six years ago on Chevening scholarship.
He was there for four months spending his time studying the media there, its role in and the impact on the society, the changes it had been undergoing then and other issues. Also he worked on different assignments in the then very famous cricket periodical ‘Wisden’ for a month as part of the scholarship.
There is a danger of travelogues boring the reader if they are filled with only facts and figures, rather than giving an insight into what the writer sees during his tour in a country. But there are good travelogues in Kannada by well-known writers like Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar (Amerikadalli Goruru), AN Murthy Rao (Aparavayaskana Amerika Yatre), BGL Swamy (Amerikeyalli Nanu), Krishnananda Kamath (Naanoo Amerikege Hogidde), who have overcome this problem and made reading travelogues a pleasant experience.
Chapparike’s ‘Thames Thatada Tavaka Tallana’ is one such book which makes the reader read the book completely at one stretch.
Chapparike reconstructs all his experiences right from flying to London from Bangalore and back in the book.
The most impressive thing about the book is Chapparike’s style of narration. He sways between the past and the present while narrating the events. He simultaneously speaks of Mulky in Dakshina Kannada and his interview with famous Indian wicket-keeper and batsman Budhi Kunderan (Budhisagar Krishnappa Kunderan), who was then settled in Glasgow, Scotland.
Chapparike sways between the past and the present with such ease and comfort that the reader never gets confused about the timeframe of the text. He knows when to speak about the past and when to bring the reader back to the present. The old and the present are evenly intertwined to make the text perfect and pleasing. Evenly mixing humour and interesting events with the facts, Chapparike takes the reader on a travel to a different world altogether. He also introduces the reader to London, its life and different historic places comparing them with what is there in India.
